Senior School elective Visual Art students visited Maitland Regional Art Gallery this term to view NoŊgirrŊa Marawili - Daughter of the Lightning Snake exhibition and complete a hands-on artmaking workshop with Ileana Clarke.
NoŊgirrŊa Marawili is regarded as one of the most important artists in Australia today. Working from the extraordinary landscape of her home in Yirrkala, north-eastern Arnhem Land, Marawili captures the atmospheric forces of water, wind and ocean as a celebration of Country and culture. Students were able to explore the expressive mark-marking and contemporary interpretations of place created by NoŊgirrŊa Marawili.
Students then progressed to a hands on workshop where they experimented with ink and stick painting, blind contour drawing, interpretive mark making and collage. Ileana Clarke then encouraged the students to engage in self-curation and criticism as they discussed resolved and still in process areas of their artworks.
